Food supplements without red rice for hypercholesterolemia

Cholesterol supplements have become increasingly widespread in recent years, in particular those based on fermented red rice, which are particularly effective thanks to the action of monacolin K, a natural statin produced by the fermentation of red rice, which has a mechanism of action similar to that of chemically synthesized statins but appears to have fewer side effects and is well tolerated in the range of 3-10mg per day. It is important to underline that despite being natural, red rice-based supplements can still present side effects, some of which are similar to those typically found in synthetic statins. However, there are other natural components that can be useful in counteracting hypercholesterolemia, which are often sought after by those who are intolerant to monocholine K or have experienced adverse effects with products based on this statin. In addition to the well-known omega 3, the main herbal medicines useful in reducing cholesterol levels are the annurca apple and bergamot. Let's see what the characteristics of these plant extracts are and then take a look at the cholesterol supplements without fermented red rice which, as we will see, are still not very widespread and the majority of the market today is mainly characterized by those with red rice base.

Annurca apple

The annurca apple is a very common apple variant in the Campania region, protected by the PGI brand, which has seen strong interest in recent years for its cholesterol-lowering properties and for its useful characteristics in hair loss. Several studies have highlighted how the annurca apple (or melannurca) is a variant particularly rich in procyanidins, molecules with strong antioxidant properties. These molecules are believed to be able to reduce LDL cholesterol and increase HDL levels. Among the various mechanisms of action, it is thought that procyanidins are capable of inhibiting the hepatic synthesis of LDL cholesterol as well as causing an increase in the ApoA1 protein, precursor of HDL cholesterol. Among the supplements based on annurca apple we find Cholesterol Apple, Mela annurca complex.

Bergamot

Bergamot, belonging to the citrus family and cultivated mainly in the province of Reggio Calabria, is very rich in polyphenols with an antioxidant action. It has antiseptic and antibacterial properties and is in fact useful for pharyngitis and inflammation of the mouth. Several studies have demonstrated its benefits in controlling cholesterol through an inhibitory action on the production of hepatic LDL. Unfortunately, as with melannurca, there are not many bergamot-based supplements. Among these we can list Erba Vita bergamot, Cholesterol statin plus, Colber, Lipocol plus, Tokaber plus.

Other supplements, however, while maintaining monacolin K, see in the formulation the presence of annurca apple such as Colesia oral gel or bergamot as in the case of No Colest. Other supplements, in association with monacolin, are enriched with omega 3 and hydroxytyrosol as in the case of Colesterolo Viti or with berberine and policosanols as in the case of Colest lipid Sanavita. Others see the association of monacolin, berberine and turmeric, such as Gealip by Igea Pharma.

In conclusion, this article aims to provide information on what can be phytotherapeutic approaches for the control of hypercholesterolemia as alternatives to classic products based on red fermented rice. Before undertaking any therapy with supplements or herbal medicines, it is always advisable to evaluate their intake through a consultation with your doctor or pharmacist.
